Casino
Casino is known as the Beef Capital of the World and is a classic country town sitting on the banks of the Richmond River and strategically located at the junction of the Bruxner Highway and Summerland Way. The area is rich in the timber, dairy and grazing country, providing a scenic backdrop for those who enjoy the great outdoors. Agriculture is at the heart of Casino’s culture, with events such as Casino Beef Week and Primex celebrating the farming industry.
Casino is a service hub for the surrounding region, offering a large variety of shops, food outlets, schools and services including a hospital, train station and regional airport.
Beyond the beef industry, Casino offers a wealth of Art Deco and heritage buildings, parks and platypus pools, country atmosphere and easy access to hinterland and coastal national parks. Other places of interest include the Northern Rivers Military Museum or the Casino Mini Railway and Museum
Casino History
The Casino district has been home to the Bundjalung people. Around 1838 a group of cedar cutters entered the lower Richmond Valley. By 1849 there were more than 20 squatters and a significant number of cedar cutters living along the Richmond River. The first evidence of a permanent settlement was at a place known as ‘The Falls’ in the early 1850s. In 1855 the town was officially gazetted and renamed Casino.
Casino got its name thanks to a spelling mistake on official documents. When Henry Clay and George Stapleton laid claim to 30,000 acres in the Richmond Valley in the late 1830s, they named their property ‘Cassino’ after the historic hillside town of Monte Cassino in Italy.
A private school was built in 1857, a doctor arrived in 1859, and the first public school opened in 1861. The Richmond River Express and Tweed Advertiser began publication in 1870. A Police Magistrate and Telegraph Office were operating by 1871. A bridge across the Richmond River was completed in 1876.
The original Casino railway station opened in 1903 when the Murwillumbah line was extended from Lismore. When the line extended from Kyogle to the Queensland Border, a new railway station was required. Opening in 1930, the Casino Railway Station still operates today and is listed on the New South Wales State Heritage Register
