The Whitsunday Regional Council developed a draft Climate Hazard Adaptation Strategy

Published on: May 6, 2021

The Whitsunday Regional Council cares about your future! They have developed a draft Climate Hazard Adaptation Strategy (CHAS) that outlines their plan for predicted future sea-level rise in our coastal communities.

According to the Whitsunday Regional Council,
With over 500km of coastline, the Whitsunday region and its residents are vulnerable to the long-term impacts of climate change.
The CHAS studies have found that by 2100 almost 590 residential dwellings in the region will be impacted by an increase of 80cm in sea level over the next 80 years. The sea-level rise will also impact roads and underground water and sewage infrastructure.

They have outlined a range of adaptation options to address these risks in each coastal community and how these options are to be funded.

For all Whitsunday residents, let your voice be heard! Complete our survey below.

To view the CHAS mapping and see how your property may be impacted in the future by storm tide and sea-level rise, visit our website here (https://mapping.whitsundayrc.qld.gov.au/trueview/wrc_plan/main)
and enter your property address.

Here you will find information about Erosion Prone Areas and Storm Tide Inundation, along with several other categories include bushfire risk and flood risk. If your property is not affected by a category it won't appear on the mapping.
You can also communicate with them in person. The consultation will be open during May 2021, and they'll be visiting your community on the following days and locations:

Bowen on Saturday 8 May –
* 8am to 10am at Queens Beach / Gideon Pott Park
* 11am to 1pm at Rose Bay beach carpark
